CLE Program: Copyright and AI Training: Recent Developments and Future Directions
Speaker: Professor Guy Rub, Vincent J. Marella Professor of Law at Temple University Beasley School of Law
Description of CLE Program: No issue in contemporary intellectual property law rivals the importance of the battles now unfolding over Artificial Intelligence. The future of this technology—and perhaps the creative economy itself—is arguably being written right now in American courtrooms. As tech giants and creative industries clash over the legality of using copyrighted works to train generative models, courts are laying the groundwork for a new era of authorship, ownership, and fair use. Are these models stealing, or simply learning? The answers will carry profound implications for how AI develops, how creators are compensated, and how the law defines human creativity itself. This session will map the major pending cases, discuss the first significant decisions, and explore what the coming years may hold for the law, the arts, and the multi-billion-dollar AI industry.
