PIPLA Meeting – April 20, 2023

We are pleased to announce that the Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association is holding a meeting on Thursday April 20, 2023 at 5:30 pm.

Location:     Volpe Koenig
                    30 S. 17th Street, 18th Floor
                    Philadelphia, PA 19103

5:30 pm      CLE Program: Fair Use or Unfair Theft: Appropriation for Fun and Profit

Speaker: Lawrence A. Husick (Lipton, Weinberger & Husick)

United States Copyright Law (17 USC Sec 101 et seq) provides that an unauthorized derivative work is an infringement of the author’s exclusive rights. The law further gives limited “moral rights” protections to artistic works. How, then, can a court say that it is permissible for someone to create a work that recasts a photograph as a nearly identical sculpture? How is it legal to take a photo, scribble on it, and publish it as your own? Has “transformation” swallowed copyright?

This term we may learn how the Supreme Court views such issues (or how it will once again ignore the clear words of a statute).

Before the court rules, come learn just how absurd it can get in the “art world”.

Please RSVP by April 18, 2023 by e-mail to pipla@vklaw.com. One hour of Pennsylvania and Delaware CLE credit has been requested.

The cost is $40.00 for members and $50.00 for guests/non-members and $15.00 for students.  Please make checks payable to “PIPLA.”

Please send payment to PIPLA Treasurer Michael P. Hogan, Kratz & Barry LLP, 325 Chestnut Street, Suite 883 #259, Philadelphia, PA 19106.  Alternatively, payment may be made via Venmo to: @PhiladelphiaIPLawAssoc-PIPLA.
