October 18, 2007 5:30 P.M. CLE Presentation "Global Infringement Liability after the Supreme Court Decision in Microsoft v. AT&T" by David L. Marcus, Esq. (Senior Patent Litigation Counsel, Comcast Cable Communications) and David R. Bailey, Esq. (Woodcock Washburn LLP).

David Bailey has litigated global infringement issues through his trial work for the Microsoft Corp v. AT&T Corp. case recently decided by the Supreme Court, and the W.R. Grace v. Intercat and Conoco case. David is a litigation partner at Woodcock Washburn and a 1990 cum laude graduate of Villanova Law School, where he was a member of the Moot Court board. He received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, with honors, from Pennsylvania State University in 1985. After graduation, David worked as an engineer for the PQ Corporation.

David Marcus is responsible for managing all patent and other intellectual property disputes involving Comcast or its affiliates and joint ventures. He is a 1997 magna cum laude graduate of Temple University School of Law, and a 1988 summa cum laude graduate of Moravian College where he majored in Mathematics and minored in Physics. Prior to joining Comcast David was a partner in the litigation practice group at Woodcock Washburn. He also served as a Submarine Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy before attending law school, including a four year tour on board the USS HELENA (SSN-725).

January 17, 2008 5:30 PM PIPLA Meeting and CLE Presentation on Appeals Practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office by William F. Smith, Esq. (Of Counsel, Woodcock Washburn LLP).

Bill Smith is a former Administrative Patent Judge at the USPTO. Mr. Smith has spent most of his professional career at the USPTO. Bill's career at the USPTO spanned over thirty years, nineteen of which were at the Board of Appeals and Interferences. Bill has also taught at the Patent Academy at the USPTO. He is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and of the Intellectual Property Owners Association. He received his J.D. from the University of Baltimore in 1976 and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.Ch.E. in 1972. Bill is a member of the Virginia bar, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

February 20, 2008 5:30 PM PIPLA Meeting and CLE Presentation: Gary D. Krugman, Esq. (Partner, Sughrue Mion, PLLC) will speak regarding (1) fraud on the PTO in trademark cases and how the TTAB has been much more strict in finding fraud under the Medinol case rationale, and (2) the new TTAB rules which have recently been enacted, relating to mandatory initial disclosures, mandatory discovery/settlement conference, etc.

Gary Krugman's concentration is in trademark prosecution and litigation in trademark and unfair competition cases. He is also frequently called on as a trademark law expert in trademark litigation. Mr. Krugman is a former Administrative Trademark Judge at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the USPTO. He worked at the USPTO from 1974 to 1989, and was a member of the TTAB 1978-1989. He is a former Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the District of Columbia Bar, a former Chair of the USPTO Public Advisory Committee for Trademarks, and is former Adjunct Professor at the Catholic University School of Law. He received his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1973 and graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 1972. Gary is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the District of Columbia Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
